Born in 1927 in the village of Beleavinţi, Moldova (at the time Romania), my grandfather, Gheorghe Prisăcariu, was 17 in 1944 when, during World War II, fearing deportation to Siberia after Russian forces reconquered Basarabia, was forced to abandon his home and flee alongside his family, crossing the Prut river into modern-day Romania.
